Ernest Blythe (1889-1975)
Born in Antrim, he was a government clerk and reporter with the North Down Herald. A Gaelic Leaguer, Blythe advocated violence to achieve political means and was deported in 1915, although he remained a Volunteer organiser. In 1918 he became a Sinn Fein TD for North Monaghan, before becoming Minister for Finance in 1922 and then Vice President of the Executive Council (deputy head of government). From 1941 to 1967 he was managing director of the Abbey Theatre.
