On Easter Monday Irish Citizen Army captain Sean Connolly and his company marched up Dame Street with the intention of taking City Hall and Dublin Castle.

They approached the gate of Dublin Castle and shot dead the unarmed Dublin Metropolitan policeman on duty, James O’Brien. City Hall and the other occupied buildings came under intense gun fire and in the afternoon Connolly was shot and killed by a sniper on the Bedford Tower in Dublin Castle.

The Volunteers gave up the position that night.
