Due to conflicting messages from Dublin, there was confusion in Wexford as to whether the Rising was to take place. Members of Cumann na mBan played an important role delivering messages back and forth from the capital to the south.
Under Captain Robert Brennan the Irish Volunteers took over Enniscorthy, setting up a HQ in the Athenaeum town hall and theatre, while blocking the roads and the railway line. Nearby, a force under Captain Paul Galligan occupied the town of Ferns before news of the surrender reached Enniscorthy on Saturday.
While a number of the officers were sentenced to death, all had those terms commuted.
