Imperial Hotel
The Irish Citizen Army’s Flag, ‘The Plough and the Stars’ was raised over the Imperial during the Rising. James Connolly is reported to have taken great pride in this event as the building was owned by his foe, William Martin Murphy — who was opposed to trade unionism and the ITGWU. Martin Murphy was at the centre of the Dublin Lock-out industrial dispute.

Today, the building is still part of Cleary’s department store. The Imperial was one of the first buildings to go down in flames during the Rising.
