Liberty Hall was just three storeys high at the time and was left in rubble when shelled by The Helga. It was the centre of pre-Rising planning with members of the IRB Military Council (Pearse, Connolly, Clarke, MacDiarmada, Ceannt and MacDonagh) meeting there to discuss the situation after the loss of the shipment of arms, Casement’s arrest and MacNeill’s countermand.
Most members of the Citizen Army, close to 1,000 Volunteers and members of Cumann na mBan assembled outside Liberty Hall at noon on Easter Monday after removing stocks of guns, ammunition and home-made bombs and grenades stored there — before it was shelled on the Wednesday.
A 16-storey Liberty Hall was built in the 1960s. Previously home to the ITGWU and Irish Citizen Army, Liberty Hall is now the headquarters of the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU).
